Korea

As part of my new role, I had the opportunity to travel to (South) Korea as a member of a delegation from the Special Olympics International. The 2013 World World Special Olympics Games will be held in PyeongChang. Korea is absolutely beautiful country and I felt so welcomed the whole time I was there (which was only 4 days -- talk about a whirlwind trip across the world!). The last day I was there, there was a press conference in Seoul where the mascot and logo of the games were revealed. It was a really moving ceremony. Congresswoman and Chairman of the Games Na (pictured below with two Korea Special Olympics athletes) gave a beautiful speech of how much holding the games in Korea means to country. There were also musical performances and dance performances as part of the unveiling. Here are a couple shots from the ceremony:

Clarinetist and Special Olympic swimmer Jin Ho Kim who performed with Yiruma, an internationally known pianist and composer. Jin will be performing at the closing ceremony of the games in Athens this summer!

The mascots: Ra - In - Bow. (Get it -- Rainbow!) Ra represents the safety of the athletes, In will greet the guests with love, and Bow will take care of all the fun. (Unfortunately I was sitting in the 3rd row... sooo I got some heads in the shot!)

Uganda

It has been quite a while since I last posted. I had the incredible opportunity to go to Uganda to work on a project with Catholic Relief Services as part of a course called Business on the Frontlines. Our project was focused on water sustainability in northern Uganda. It was an incredible journey, filled with a lot of emotions, and left our team determined to find a solution. We met some amazing Ugandans and traveled through the gorgeous country. Here are a few photos of my journey:

We took a quick trip up to NYC this weekend for my brother's holiday party. I absolutely love NYC during the holidays and try to get to Rockefeller Center to see the tree and the displays on 5th Avenue every year. Of course, I forgot my "real" camera so I snapped a few photos with my iPhone. (Ok truth be told, I took a lot of photos but these are the ones that came out best.)

It's finals week.... so I am procrastinating.... but on my way home from the library (see I was studying!!) I snapped this photo on my phone of the Golden Dome.... It started snowing Saturday and literally did not stop snowing until yesterday! Lucky its really pretty snow that is easy to dust off my car!

This past weekend several of my dearest friends came into town for the last home game of the season. The whole day was a blast and it was such a great win. We scored enough points that everyone in our group got to do air push ups!

I got to spend Halloween with one of my favorite families! Jackson was dressed up a Mickey Mouse and Cole went as Anakin Skywalker. Ila dressed up as a leprechaun but when we asked Jackson what mommy was dressed as he said a green turtle! We had a blast taking them treat or treating through the neighborhood! Here are a few shots of our evening:

Fall!

Fall is my absolute favorite season. I love the changing colors of the leaves, crisp air, college football, pumpkin everything, and wearing boots. I also love that fall leads into the season of thanksgiving and spending time with the people you love the most.

This fall morning had an interesting start... It was insanely windy here with a massive downpour and tornado warnings all morning. I started the day wearing these:

But then it turned into an absolutely perfect fall day. I took a stroll around campus between two of my classes and played with a new app I put on my iPhone called Hipstamatic and got the following shots (all taken from my iPhone -- can you believe it?!):

Notre Dame played Pittsburgh yesterday and pulled out the win which we definitely needed. Its been a bit of a heartbreaking season and fans have been losing hope so a win was definitely in order! The weather yesterday was amazing and the whole day was an absolute blast. I took this picture with my iPhone during the game and I just love how it came out.

Now I'm hoping for a Redskins win this afternoon!

Strasburg Debut

This was a big week in Washington, DC.... Strasburg made his debut with the Nationals. He pitched a phenomenal game and sold out the stadium for the first time. Its great to have this energy in DC and to have people get this excited about the Nationals who have struggled since their start. When I opened the Washington Post on Wednesday I saw this photo by Jonathan Newton and was blown away!:

I finally had a chance to get out this Sunday and take a few photos of the gorgeous Notre Dame campus. If you have never been here, I recommend adding it to your list of places to visit. It is an incredibly powerful place. I snapped a few photos on this gorgeous fall day.

There have been many happenings in Blackburn/Coogen/Sellers Families over the last few weeks! Both Lyla and Ryan turn 1! I cannot believe a year has gone by already! They are growing so fast and moving around like crazy and getting into everything! Here are some highlights of these sweet babies...

Costa Rica!

I am back and recovered from Costa Rica. It was an awesome trip! We did a lot -- kayaking, rafting, horseback riding, ziplining through the rainforest, and snorkling. We were in the towns of La Fortuna, Monteverde, and Samara. Here are a few of my favorite photos from the trip:

Tom and Mary's wedding

Tom and Mary got married this past weekend and asked me to be their photographer! I was honored. They are such a wonderful couple and were so much fun to shoot. Their ceremony was at the Walter Reed Chapel -- Mary's family, the Mologne's, have left a wonderful legacy at Walter Reed so this was a very special place for Tom and Mary. The reception followed at the beautiful Strathmore Mansion in Bethesda. Fortunately the rain held off for their day! I am still editing through some photos but here are a few teasers from Saturday. Vacation around the corner....

So next week I am headed to Costa Rica for a week vacation. I (and my camera) could not be more excited. We have a week full of fun activities including kayaking, ziplining, hiking, snorkling, and beach dwelling. In thinking about our vacation I was looking through some of my travel photos and found a few I wanted to share.

The first two were taken in Zanzibar - which is an island off the Tanzanian Coast. It is absolutely beautiful there!

So next to my apartment every Spring the management plants beautiful tulips... They only last about 2 weeks but they are beautiful while they last! We have had the most bizarre winter/spring here and I am hoping that spring is here to stay! Viva Las Vegas!!

A couple weeks ago I headed out to Las Vegas with 15 of my soriority sisters from college for a Bachlorette party. We had an absolute blast! I unfortunately did not get out to the strip with my camera for any night shots... we were too busy eating and dancing during those hours.

But here are two photos from during the day when I broke away from the pool for an hour :)

I know I have been slacking on my photo updates. I spent last weekend at the Natural History Museum and got to check out the Butterfly exhibit with my camera. I will be posting photos soon from that fun excursion!

World War II Memorial

Its amazing how much DC has to offer. I have had the chance to play a couple sports (football, softball, kickball, soccer) on the mall and at every game look around in awe that we are playing sports on the grounds of such incredible monuments and memorials. So this week for my photography class, I took my camera to the World War II Memorial to snap a few shots. It was cold so I did not last too long out there but here are the two photos I submitted. I am going to do a monument night photo walk when it gets warmer so stay tuned for that!

The assignment for this week was using natural lighting inside to shoot a subject. Sweet Baby Lyla was my subject. This second photo cracks me. It is what Michael calls "The Phantom Cry"... Lyla didnt actually cry after she made this face. It was one yell and it last for about 5 seconds. The first photo is sweet.... seriously have you ever seen cuter eyes than this?? I have a couple more fun photos from this impromptu photo shoot I will post later this week!

U Street... A City Within A City

So maybe I am biased.... but I really think U Street is the coolest neighborhood in DC. It has a ton of character. While out shooting for my class I took photos of two of my favorite places on U street. The first is out in front of Marvin and the second is at the Love Cafe.

"Lines" assignment

My assignment for this week was "lines." I had the chance to meet up with a wonderful old friend on Saturday, Katie to shoot some photos. We walked around U street and got some fun shots. Photography class week 1

So I have never had any formal training... my training has been exposure to really talented photographers. As part of my New Years Resolution, I signed up for a photography course. Last week was my first class and it looks like it is going to be a great class! My first assignment was "emotion." What a perfect week to be able to capture emotion here in the Nation's Capitol! I don't love the two photos I submitted for "emotion" but I love the history and meaning behind them.

This photo was taken 2 blocks away from my apartment where an awesome Brasilian drum band played. I love the bedazzled Obama hat and this woman's expression and as she soaks in the music and the historic moment!

This photo was taken inside a hangar at Andrew's Air Force Base while the former President was speaking prior to his departure to Texas!

Reflections

For the last 6 years, I have had the incredible opportunity to do press advance for the White House. Through this I have seen parts of our country and world from a unique lens. It has also provided me an opportunity to take photos and learn from some of the incredibly talented photographers that travel with the President.

The memories, friendships, and experiences will always remain close to my heart. From time to time I will post photos from my press advance travels.
